Frontend Design (skill)
Skill, agent skill, by Anthropic
Assessment
The one skill to load before building anything people will see. It changes what a request for a page returns, which is the test of a skill worth having. It shaped this site.

Strengths
- Breaks the default look of generated pages: the same font, the same gradient, the same card grid
- Makes the agent plan palette, type and layout before writing code
- Official and widely installed, so it is maintained
Limitations
- A strong point of view: it will push past a brief that wanted something plain
- Its own defaults can become a new cliché if used without a real subject
Frontend Design is Anthropic's official skill for building user interfaces with a coding agent.[1] Loaded, it makes the agent act as a design lead: ground the design in the subject, decide on a palette and typefaces, sketch the layout, review the plan against the brief for anything that reads as a template, and only then write code.
Why it exists
Ask any model for a landing page with no guidance and the result converges on the statistical centre of web design: one well-known sans-serif, a purple gradient on white, a grid of rounded cards. It is not wrong; it is forgettable, and by 2026 readers recognise it as machine-made.[2] The skill names that convergence and gives the agent a process that escapes it.
How it is used
Invoke it as a slash command or let it trigger on a UI task. It asks for the subject and the audience when the brief does not say, proposes tokens for colour, type and layout, and builds to a quality floor: responsive, keyboard focus visible, reduced motion respected.
Things to know
- It counts the near-black-with-one-acid-colour look among the defaults to avoid, which a brief can still ask for; the brief wins.
- Pair it with a review pass; strong visual opinions still ship CSS bugs.
- It is the first place a new theme should be discussed, not the last.
