Google Workspace gws (CLI and skill)
Skill, agent skill, by Google
Assessment
The fastest path from an agent to a Google account, and exactly the kind of tool to approve deliberately: it moves mail, calendars and documents through an agent. Watch it; use it only with a scoped account and a reason.

Strengths
- One CLI that discovers every Google Workspace API and exposes it to an agent, with an MCP server built in
- Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides and admin APIs without per-API client code
- Recipes for common personas: assistant, project manager, admin
Limitations
- Everything it touches is personal or organisational data leaving to Google through an agent
- OAuth setup and scopes still need care; broad scopes are the easy mistake
gws is Google's command-line tool for Workspace, released in March 2026.[1] It discovers the Workspace APIs through Google's Discovery Service and exposes them as one interface, and it ships an MCP server so an agent can be given Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Sheets access with a single command. It reached several thousand GitHub stars within days.
What it is for
Agents that operate rather than only code: draft replies to mail, keep a task sheet current, put meeting notes into a document, create calendar events, pull a report from Drive. The recipes in the project cover an executive-assistant persona, a project manager, an IT administrator and a sales workflow.
Why it is on the watch list rather than in use
Every one of those tasks sends personal or organisational data through an agent to Google's APIs. Under a rule that nothing leaves the network without an approved reason, this is a decision per use case, with a dedicated account and the narrowest scopes that work.[2]
Things to know
- Scope the OAuth consent to the APIs the task needs;
gws mcp -s drive,gmailis a parameter, not a default. - Log what the agent did on your behalf; mail sent by an agent is still mail you sent.
