Valyu (search and data skill)
Skill, agent skill, by Valyu
Assessment
The search to consider when an agent needs authoritative, current or paywalled data rather than the open web. For a home system with its own metasearch, it is an egress decision first and a capability second.

Strengths
- Web search plus specialised sources through one API: SEC filings, PubMed, clinical trials, economic data, patents
- A cited-answer call for grounded responses
- Strong published results on time-sensitive and domain questions
Limitations
- A paid cloud service, metered per search
- Another outbound channel for queries, with the same egress questions as any search
Valyu is a search and data API aimed at agents: one call searches the web and a set of specialised indexes, among them SEC filings, PubMed, ChEMBL, clinical trial registries, FRED economic series and patent databases, and returns documents or a cited answer.[1] Its skill teaches an agent to pick sources explicitly and to surface citations.
What it is for
Research agents whose answers must be current and traceable: financial filings, biomedical literature, economic indicators. The article behind this entry quotes benchmark results well ahead of general web search on time-sensitive and domain-specific questions.[2]
Things to know
- Be specific about sources in each query; the skill's first rule is to name the index rather than search everything.
- Prefer the answer call when a direct, cited response is wanted; the document call when the agent will read.
- Always show the sources to the reader. The data is only as trustworthy as the citation trail.
- It is a metered cloud service, so the same rules apply as to any outbound query: a reason, no identifiers, a log.
